Physical and Chemical Principles in Materials Science

This program, taking place in China, is intended for a general audience. It offers an opportunity to discover the physical and chemical principles used in materials science, including:

  • introductions to the stages of design, 
  • elaboration and characterization of the materials, 
  • targeted applications. 

The training involves 2-hour lectures, followed by 1-hour tutorials based on case studies, oral exchanges and discussions. Visits of some of experimental facilities in the laboratories of the School of Materials Science and Engineering will be organized.

  • Quantum mechanical principles of spectroscopies for materials science
  • Computational methods in materials science
  • Introduction to synchrotron radiation and to advanced x-ray spectroscopies
  • Scanning electron microscopy and electron probe microanalysis. Illustration for periodic multimaterials applied in x-ray optics
  • Crystal Growth
  • Thermodynamical principles of phase transformation (solidification and heat treatment)
  • Kinetics in phase transformation
  • Fabrication and Microstructure of Textured Electro-ceramics by Reactive-templated Grain Growth Method
  • Thermodynamical principles of phase transformation (solidification and heat treatment)
  • Electronic Properties of Materials
  • Resonant X-ray emission and absorption for material characterization
  • Synthesis of nano-material with chemical methods
  • Metallic nanoparticles: design, fundamentals and new applications. A scanning tunneling microscopy investigation
  • Advanced XPS tools for the characterization of functional surfaces and for the real-time monitoring of chemical reactions
  • Fabrication and Microstructure of Textured Electro-ceramics by Reactive-templated Grain Growth Method
